Low Back Pain As a sports-injury care chiropractor and Active Release Technique® (ART) provider, virtually every type of running complaint will show up in my clinic, however two of the most common complaints are low back and hip joint pain Most runners will experience a variety of over-use injuries. Basic biomechanical failures are amplified because running is a highly repetitive activity. The incredible neuro-biomechanical system we use to walk and run depends on many complex factors but in my lectures to runners I emphasize the following: 1 Running requires a basic symmetry of movement between the left and right foot/arch complex, leg-length, pelvic S.I. (sacro-iliac) joints and spinal joint mobility. 2 Additionally muscles and connective tissues, like the IT band must elongate without friction 3 many runners have an asymmetry, a low arch, short leg, spinal or pelvic joint mobility restrictions, tight hip flexor or a degenerative lumbar disc which causes a loss of shock absorption 4 running creates asymmetries, even those “born to run” types eventually experience a breakdown, i.e. overdevelopment of the gluteal/piriformis muscles can create not only deep buttock pain and or hip joint bursitis, but also can cause external rotation of the femur and lead to IT band or runner’s knee problems 5 low back and pelvic pain are usually related to biomechanical faults that can easily be diagnosed and treated successfully with spinal and pelvic manipulation and myofascial deep tissue treatment such as Active Release Technique®, massage therapy, and Yoga-type stretching, rehab exercises that accentuate core muscle and balance the less-dominant muscle groups If you’re in pain you might be a “biomechanical failure” not a “non-runner”. by: Dr. Paul Wiggins, D.C. |
