I have to say it was a great weekend overall!  I felt prepared as far as having a marathon playlist for my ipod if necessary, enough nutrition, knew when to take it, what to eat beforehand etc and I brought 3 separate outfits based on the weather.  Mentally, however, I was kind of a basket case.  Well, not REALLY, but I was super nervous the day before and even for the first bit of the run.  Somehow I managed a pretty good sleep.  I woke up 40 min before the alarm but could only force myself a few bites for breakfast.  I took ibuprofen for my shin and quad and I think that wreaked havoc on my tummy, since I had no food to help absorb it.  I ran for probably 1.5 hrs with burning stomach pain (mi 16-22).  Also a weird, mild cramp that just hung around for a long time.  But, nothing unbearable.

The weather was fantastic - overcast and 9 or 10 degrees.  Perfect.  A very scenic route.  A lot of people were complaining about the hills, but compared to North Van it was very manageable.  Only one really steep one where I walked.  Not that I didn't walk anywhere else! I took a lot of walk breaks (a few too many probably).  But overall we felt good and had a lot of fun.  It was so exciting approaching and coming through the finish line.  My time was pretty slow and most spectators had probably left - haha: 5:10:00.

So, of course, I will likely do another at some point, just to try and improve my time. Maybe NYC in a year??  But with the 8 week taper (instead of 2 or 3wk) and fear of the unknown, I worried about the worst and I really did end up finding it quite manageable.  Rory ran the last 4 mi with me so that was great!  And my parents and kids were out there to cheer me on too, which really helped along the way.

I'm not doing as poorly as I expected as far as recovery.  I can walk ok etc... going down stairs and hills is tough and I haven't managed to take the dog for a walk yet for fear of him pulling me.  But, pretty much ran the race injury free - the shin and quad were pretty good.  I ended up with one big blood blister on a toe and that's it!

Enjoy your week,
Elaine
